Here’s information on doggy health care products that I give our Rouse House gang:

* DVM Pharmaceuticals ChlorHexiDerm Flush.  Put it on a cotton ball to clean ears.  Get it online at PetCareRx.

* 8in1 Excel Brewers Yeast with Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Garlic.  Give one tablet for each 10 pounds of body weight. My dogs love this stuff!  Get it at Pet Smart.

* Spring Valley Double Strength Glucosamine 500 mg/Chondroitin 400 mg.  This is the kind for people, but it’s also good for dogs.  It helps prevent joint problems.  I give each dog ½ tablet each day.  Get it at Wal-Mart.

Here’s a recipe for some frozen treats that my dogs just LOVE - and yours will, too.

Phil’s Hawaiian Kine Frozen Dog Treats

32 oz. Fat Free Vanilla Yogurt
18 oz. Creamy Peanut Butter
3 cups smashed bananas (about 10)

Put the peanut butter in a microwaveable bowl, and heat until melted (about 1-1/2 minutes).  Add the yogurt to the melted peanut butter and mix well.  Add the smashed bananas and mix well.  Mix well.  Spoon into muffin pans lined with paper cupcake cups.  Freeze until firm.  Remove treats from pans and store in freezer bags.  Makes about 36 treats.

Here are some things I do to show my love for my family of dogs…

I keep a supply of inexpensive washcloths on hand to wipe their faces.  On hot days, I rinse the washcloths in cold water; on cold days, I rinse it in warm water.  I wipe their faces gently, especially around their eyes.  They seem to enjoy getting a clean face.  I try to do this once/week when I also clean their ears.

Every weekend they get a different kind of “homemade” treat:  pieces of red delicious apple, raw egg (puts a shine on their coat), scoops of canned pumpkin (make sure it’s NOT pumpkin pie mix), slices of cheese, or the frozen treat.

Occasionally, my husband Johnny, surprises me by creating/writing verse about our Rouse House Family.

Below, I’ve listed two poems that Johnny wrote – both of which are very special to me.

The first, Our Daughters, he wrote in Honolulu in 2004.  It describes our four dogs – all of whom we brought from Hawaii to Texas in 2005.

The second, Two Lost Boys, was written in 2007, here in Bryan/College Station, after a former co-worker of mine, Cheryl, asked me to help her find a home for two older Golden Retrievers, Max and Koby.   They had been abandoned in their own treeless, shade less, tiny, barren backyard.

I think Johnny is a special guy (our Rouse House gang certainly agree)…and I hope that you enjoy these as much as I do.

Our Daughters

My Wife and I are very Blessed
For our Daughters in our Family.
There’s Karma, Nue, and Malina, too …
And, of course, our Nani.

Each has a different Attitude,
And Personality…
Our Karma, Nue, and Malina, too …
And, of course, our Nani.

One is Dark.  One is White –
And One is sorta Gray …
And the Black n’ Tan Min Pin One
Talks the Basenji Way.

And like daughters everywhere,
Sleeping is a Specialty …
For Karma, Nue, and Malina, too
And, of course, our Nani.

Three of our Girls are from the Streets.
One has a Pedigree.
It’s not Nue or Malina …
And it’s not Our Nani …
It’s Karma.  Our Heaviest Daughter …
And we’re trying to slim Her down …
But when we give Her diet food
She Pouts and Wears a Frown.

Daughter No. 2 is our Nue Poo …
The One you could NEVER buy!
She has a Sweet and Gentle Spirit …
And Ears like a Butterfly.

Daughter No. 3 is Harder to See
‘Cause She’s the Shortest of the Four …
But Our Nani’s as Wide as She is Tall …
She’s Our Baby that we Adore.

And then there is Our Youngest One …
Malina.  Our No. 4.
We’ve given Her Love and a Family …
She’s given Us so much more.

For She was Not Wanted by Anyone …
She was Abandoned – and All Alone.
Like Nue …
We found Her in Doggie Orphanage …
Then We brought Her Home.

So, now I’ve told you of Our Daughters …
The Children in Our Family …
And We will Share Unconditional Love
Throughout Eternity.

For No Matter where We Move To …
No Matter where We Roam …
They will be our Daughters …

And Make our House – our Home.

Two Lost Boys

I must tell you a sad tale
‘Bout two dogs – Max and Koby.
They lived in a barren empty backyard –
With no loving family.

No one who really loved the …
Or cared if they lived or died.
Their next-door neighbor saw this –
And felt Anger she couldn’t hide.

So good neighbor, Cheryl,
Told my Wife about these Boys …
How they weren’t fed – or walked …
That they had no playtime toys.

And my good wife, Philomina
(A caring, loving Soul)
Said that she would try to help
These Lost Boys of Brown and Gold.

Phil telephoned and emailed
All those who Claim they Care.
All said they were FULL – a Bunch of BULL!!!
No Foster Homes anywhere.

Phil said, "So – We have to go
And see these Boys with gentle eyes …
‘Cause we’ll never know (unless we go) …
At least, we have to Try.”

On a Friday, we went and met them …
We saw their small, hot space
Where they had been Discarded –
It was a lonely, empty place.

But when the Boys first saw us –
Warmth filled their gentle eyes …
We scratched their ears (and tried to calm their Fears)
And said, “How are you Guys?”

Wagging Tails welcomed us well …
They truly wiggled, waggled – and smiled.

Max brought us a ball (the only one we saw)
And wanted to play “Fetch” awhile.

And when we looked into their gentle eyes
And saw their Depth of Soul …
Our hearts overflowed with Sadness and Love –
For these Lost Boys of Brown and Gold.

Phil and I now Cherish them …
They’ve joined our Family.
For God has Blessed us with Eternal Love
For our new Sons:  Max and Koby.

And we will Love and Play with them
‘Till God Calls each One Home.
For they’ve now “Found” a Family –
And they will NEVER be alone.

Please meet our gang on our Rouse House Family page.
